Ever wonder where the bottles came from after the initial sale in the 1800's ? Here's the article that announced how to obtain one and an original bottle tag in near new condition. This ad is probably from the mid 1980's after the donation.
Initially in only 400-500 bottles had been sold. Then In the mid 1980's the bottles were discovered in an attic in an old home in Nevada City, California.
The Smithsonian Institute immediately said they wanted all of the bottles. The Donner Memorial State Park decided to give the Smithsonian half of the recovered bottles and the rest were donated by the C.W. Chapman family of Nevada City to the non-profit foundation to raise money for the Murphy Cabin research and interpretation.
