Green border, green blank seal underprint of train in oval. Vignette of train in station at top center, bottom center 3 men loading a box on wagon. Printed: In border by Continental Banknote Co. NY. Houston & Great Northern Railroad Co chartered on Oct 22, 1866 to run from Houston to Red River on Canadian border. Organizers included Edenezar B. Nichols, William Marsh Rice of Texas and Moses Taylor of NY. 1st president was Charles G. Young. 55 miles of track between Houston and New Waverly laid In 1871. Following year 56 more miles laid between New Waverly and Crockett. Acquired the Houston Tap and Barazoria Railway in 1873 and the Huntsville Branch, a total of 58 miles. That year it laid 84 miles of track between Crockett and Palestine and between Troup and Mineola. In 1873 it transferred its 253.1 miles of track to the International-Great Northern and became part of that system.
