Gold easily seen throughout this fabulous high-grade ore. 4" x 1.75" x 1." 4.2 ounces. Tag 1 reads: "...Quartz / from Pittsburg Mine / Nevada, Cal / From 500 ft level / Assay: $1,000 per ton / by / A. D. Tower agt / Nevada." Second tag reads: "WELLS FARGO & CO / No 1 / Quartz / NEVADA." The Pittsburg Mine Road can be found between Nevada City and Grass Valley just off of Highway 20 and near Banner Reservoir. We found little information about this mine, but it was listed in the 1867 Nevada Township Directory. A. D. Tower started working for Wells Fargo in 1852. He was the first messenger on the steamboats that traveled between San Francisco and Sacramento. In 1857, he transferred to Nevada City as agent. He held this position until his death in 1900. With 48 years of consecutive service, he was the longest tenured Wells Fargo employee at the time of his death [San Francisco Call, April 9, 1900]. City: Nevada City State: California Date: ID# 37240
