This is a legitimate 1860's Bowie Knife. It is made of wagon spring steel - as hard as it gets. This stag handled knife is crude, but well made. The accompanying newspaper article tells the story of this knife. It was found near Donner Lake by a couple who sold it to Tom Newton who had it on loan with the Sportsmen's Club in Sparks. The article goes on to say, "The stag-handled weathered and rusted bowie knife could well be more than 120 years old. It may have been lost by emigrant pioneers who crossed the mountains on their way west. It may have even been property of the ill-fated Donner Party."
