This is a "K. Schefer Zurich" made side by side shotgun; Black Powder vintage antique. S/N 1423X. The barrels are true Damascus that are heavily patinated brown; only upon close examination can the twist be seen. The gun is marked 16.8 indicating a 16 gauge bore with a 70 mm or 2 3/4 in. chamber. This is a hammer gun with exposed rebounding hammers on a beautiful fence. The locks are back action and nicely engraved with a stag on each side. The gun sports a Lefaucheux bolting system with a very cleaver second lever to release the barrels for take-down and cleaning. The barrels are 31 in. (79 cm) long. There is a damage spot on the left barrel 2 in. from the muzzle. The gun is built without a forearm but rather the forward lever release system acts as the forward mount. The butt-stock is European walnut, beautifully tiger striped and the wrist checkering is at 18 LPI. The trigger guard contains two triggers; the forward trigger has a LOP at 13 3/4 in. The back side of the trigger guard has a horn style pistol grip so common on European shotguns of this period. The butt-plate is steel and there are two sling swivels; one on the underside of the barrel and the other on the butt-stock. This gun has minimal markings but is proof marked for BP (black powder only) with Belgian proof markings. The gun is thought to have been made between 1850 to 1893) (historiadelasarmasdefuego.blogspot.com) based on the proof marking.
