Hymnal book of the German Reformed Church, printed in 1763 by Cristoph Saur of Germantown, Philadelphia, PA. Title page of the book describes it as "newly enlarged and complete, a book containing both Songs of David ... and 730 selected old and new hymns, which are used to be sung in the Reformed churches ... provided with the Heidelberg Catechism and edifying prayers" (all original text in German; this is a translation). The hymns are copied/adapted from the work of Dr. Ambrosius Lobwasser (1515-1585), a German translator and academic known for his influential psalm-book.
This is truly an excellent historical piece; printed almost 40 years after the founding of the German Reformed Church, it provides a window into the religion of Pennsylvania's German-speaking immigrant culture. The text is printed in a dense Fraktur typeface, and occasional segments of staff notation are included. It also includes an excellent woodcut frontispiece. Hardback, 869 pages, original leather binding. Brass clasps on cover are partially intact, but leather straps have been destroyed/removed. The book has cosmetic wear to cover and toning on pages consistent with its age, but the binding is tight and stable; see photos. 4.5"x6.75"x2".
