Two documents for the Washington Mining Company whose claim was in the township of Newfield, York County, Maine [incorrectly listed as Massachusetts on one of the documents]. One document is calling for a meeting of the proprietors in the house of Alexander Price in Kittery, Maine on the second Tuesday of January to address the following articles: choose a moderator; choose a clerk; choose an agent or agents; confirm the doings of the Proprietors at their last meeting in Kittery on Sept. 29th, 1796; and agree on a method for calling a proprietor's meeting in the future. Dated June 22, 1804. Signed by William Frost, Sam Haven, Elijah Drew, and Thomas Davis. The other document is a ledger page of sort to Elijah Drew, agent for the company. Includes bills for iron work, oil, labor for Thomas Davis, and 5 1/2 weeks work on the mine. The shareholders are listed on page 2. Both documents have expected wear for being over 200 years old, including folds, foxing, small rips, and soiling. 12 x 7.5" The History of York County, Maine (Clayton, 1880) mentions this mining company and says it formed on August 17th, 1792. It lists the company officers as Bradstreet Doe, Andrew Doe, Theophilus Doe, Nathaniel B. Doe, Elijah Drew, Leader Nelson, Eben Hill, and Thomas Davis. Nine 100 acre lots were purchased for mining silver. An iron furnace was erected at the outlet to Balch Pond (pg. 350). These are incredible early record from one of America's earliest mines!
