We described this as brilliant uncirculated, CAC declared it ineligible for certification with no explanation. Judd 67 is a pattern for a one dollar gold coin dated 1836. Two denominations were issued as patterns in 1836 that wouldn't become coinage for many years: the two cent piece (1864) and the one dollar gold piece (1849). Obverse: a liberty cap surrounded by a sunburst; the word Liberty inscribed on the cap band. Reverse: a coiled palm frond encircling the denomination "1. / D." with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around. 4.1 grams; 15 mm. About 30-40 are thought to exist, this one joining the population in this sale. A collector from Michigan, at the ANA in Chicago, told us "I'd love to own this coin, but my wife would kill me. No examples located in the PCGS/NCC auction database. Exceptional rarity.
