Very early mining report by a very famous mining geologist! This was right around the beginning of the Georgia/North Carolina Gold Rush. 27 pages. Coal mine located near Frostburgh, Allegany County, Maryland. Printed by Scatcherd & Adams, New York. Silliman notes that "the geological structure of this coal field is very simple and intelligible" and yet "the coal of the Frostburgh region is of a peculiar character, peculiar at least among American coals" given that it is "the connecting link between the bituminous coals and the anthracite." Benjamin Silliman is considered to be one of the first American professors of science (at Yale), as well as the first person to distill petroleum and founder of the American Journal of Science. Wear and repairs to covers. Some soiling to pages. 9" x 6" State: Maryland City: Allegany County Date: FHWAC#: 34804
