Springfield 1849 marked Smoothbore musket. The 1842 Smoothbore muskets represents the first percussion cap (ignition system) U.S. military arm. The U.S. Military realized it needed to modernize from the Flintlock System of revolution era times to the much quicker and cleaner percussion cap system. These muskets were produced from 1844-1854 in 69 caliber with the earliest ones being used in the War of 1847 in Texas against Mexico and the Civil War on both sides. This arm has been cut down to a carbine size with the ramrod removed. The original barrel length was in the nature of 40 inches; this piece is currently 24 inches. Condition is marginal as it has seen much use. Action is not functioning and the furniture is intact but could use some TLC. Overall a fine piece of military significance. Excellent as a conversation piece of American History. State: City: Date: FHWAC#: 42744
