Could this be none other than Elias Jackson Baldwin - or as Lucky Baldwin as he was known in the California Gold Rush? Baldwin was a wheeler and dealer from a very you age and this letter is about buying land between the Erie Canal and Camp Stuart(?). It is written to the Surveyor General H. Halsey. This is something a very young Lucky Baldwin would be working on. Yet, perhaps not. There is another E. J. Baldwin listed in the 1849 Buffalo Directory. He/she was working in the Buffalo Hospital. VERY Unusual scroll 'PAID' and for 20 cents. Fancy Buffalo Jun. 13 postmark. Quite nice! Very fragile!
