27 pages. "Report on the Gold Deposites [sic.] and Works of the Manteo Mining Company in North Carolina, by Philip T. Tyson." Printed by John D. Toy, Baltimore, 1853. Includes two full-page maps and detailed reports of the Jones Mining Property and Loflin Mining Property, both located in Randolph County. Tyson is an important author as he wrote the first official publication on the California Gold Rush in 1849 where he advised on the difficulty of mining for gold in quartz. Here he states that North Carolina provides "remarkable localities" where "a very different state of things occurs from that presented by quartzose veins. Instead of gold in veins requiring the ablest and consequently most costly mining skill...we find it disseminated throughout vast masses of soft shale" which could be worked "without incurring the expense of a single dollar for pumping, draining, or ventilating." Describes in detail the machinery and methods used for extraction. Please inspect. Condition: toning and stains. Not original covers. 8.75" x 5.5" City: Randolph County State: North Carolina Date: ID# 34832
