LeCount & Strong's San Francisco City Directory for the Year 1854. Frank Rivers, compiler, 1854. Printed by the SF Herald. 264pp, plus88pp ads, hardcover, foxing throughout, as expected. Covers good, and all original. This is a very important directory for San Francisco. It is issued the first year of operation for the new Branch Mint at San Francisco, headed by Birdsall, with Hewston as melter & refiner. It belonged to lawyers Love & Rogers, whose name is inscribed on the front cover. The directory lists many businesses and individuals that are scarcely known to researchers. Among them are A.S. Wright, assayer; Charleton, die sinker; as well as main stream businesses such as Chase & Co., soda water mfgrs (2 full page ads), Shreve "rich jewelry", Turner Bros. cordials; banks, assay offices, etc. James King of William listed on p80 (no ads though), Augustus Humbert ("late US Assay Office"). This is the break-out year for San Francisco business, head by the opening of the US Mint. 6 x 9"
