Important 6 x 9" Colville's Directory and Gazetteer of the City of San Francisco for 1856-1857. 307pp plus 56pp of other stuff (that's a technical term!) paginated in Roman numerals, plus 17pp of ads in the front, unpaginated. Original binding with contents showing small amount of foxing, with some wear to spine. There is no indication to whom this book originally belonged to. This is the year of the great SS Central America disaster, a ship that sank off the East Coast with more than $3 million in gold, lost until two major recoveries in the late 20th, and early 21st centuries recovered most - a treasure worth approximately $300 million today. Some of the passengers onboard are listed in this directory. City and business directory at the back. Choice advertisements include Barry & Patten (full pg.), PMSS (full pg.), Freeman Express (full pg.), Strahle (billiard tables), Wells Fargo, etc. Quebedeaux calls this "the First Great San Francisco Directory". He cites a map by Britton & Rey, but fails to state where the map is located within the directory, as we see no sign of it, unless it was imme3diately inside the front cover Another bibliographer calls this the "scarcest San Francisco directory, rivaling the 1850" (Quebedeaux, p136).
