Sacramento Directory and Gazetteer for the Years 1857 and 1858 compiled and published by I.N. Irwin. According to Quebedeaux, "Sacramento was still a transient city, a stopover and supply center for the mines." He also states that, "1857 was rather unimportant in Sacramento, but did see the first stage take the round trip on the important wagon road between Placerville and Carson Valley in Alpine County, first wagon road over the High Sierra." The introduction includes Statistical and Historical Reviews of the city's schools, railroad, water works, the Dawson House, societies, military companies, fire departments, state and local government officials, courts, etc. Directory contains an alphabetical list of residents, their occupations, and their addresses. This directory includes Leland Stanford (page 89) who later became the 8th governor of California in 1862. Business advertisements on the covers and throughout the pages. 9 x 5.5, good condition.
