Spectacular. This letter was sent from San Francisco, Nov. 21st, 1859, right at the beginning of the Comstock silver rush. It is addressed to Judge James Walsh of Carson County, Utah Territory (Nevada Territory would not be formed until 1861). Message from VA Houseworth advises Walsh to pay Theodore Winters $286 "of my proportion of the value of the ore taken by you from the "Comstock claim...and assayed by your order in the city of San Francisco." The Comstock claim referenced is surely the Ophir claim, the discovery site for the Comstock Lode in Virginia City. 7.25 x 9.5" Folds. Walsh had three assays of ore completed. The other two were done earlier by Melville Atwood, assayer in Grass Valley on June 27th 1859, and days later by J.J. Ott, assayer in Nevada City. After receiving the assay results, Judge Walsh went over to the Washoe and purchased one sixth of the Ophir Claim from Henry P. Comstock for whom the mining region was later named. During September 1859, Walsh brought 3150 lbs. of ore to Mosheimer & Kustel in San Francisco for refining and assaying. After the shipping and processing expenses, he netted $4,781. Winters was also one of the owners of the Ophir ground. This letter signals his payment from his share. This is an incredibly important Comstock document mentioning key players and assays. It is worthy of the most advanced private or museum collection.
