This mining claim document details a $300 transaction for a claim on a quartz ledge. Deep folds and separation. Blue paper with a 50 cent revenue stamp that obscures some of the writing. According to Gudde, Hornitos was a town located 13 miles west of Mount Bullion in Mariposa County in 1852 by Mexicans. By 1858, a quartz mill with two arrastres was operating. By 1860, there was a steam-driven stamp mill with 20 stamps. The biggest mine for the town was the Washington or Jenny Lind Mine. The dance hall supposedly had a secret tunnel used by legendary robber Joaquin Murieta to avoid the authorities. Hornitos incorporated in 1870 as the first city located in Mariposa County.
