22.5 x 31" hand drawn and colored map of mining properties on Union and Central Hill drawn by W, Schofield, mining and civil engineer, dated Austin, Lander Co., Nevada, Sept. 1865. This is a remarkable and previously unpublished map showing the relative locations of the following lodes from waht may be the very beginning of the discovery period in 1863: (from south to north) Brown & Butler; Penobscot; Naiad Queen; Burra Burra; Espinasena; North River; Sterling Co.; Achilles; and a few more. The mills of the Boston Co. and the Oregon Co are shown, along with the Overland Trail at the left edge of the map, north of all else shown. The ore house for the Naiad Queen is also shown. A pencil note was added later on the Oregon Mill, "now Manhattan Co.".
This may possibly be the very first map drawn of the "ore" veins in this scetion of the Reese River District, as most or all of these were given other names very soon. Interestingly, no portion of this map is identified on the Lander Hill (Reese River) map of Raymond in Mineral Resources West of the Rocky Mountains, 1869, opposite p78. Further, no mention is made in that chapter of Central and Union hills, even though the Oregon Co.'s mill appears to show on the 2 maps.
The district was discoverred in December 1862, and a mini-rush ensued in 1863. But thin veins, coupled with the remote location and lack of infrastructure caused a slow-down in production (only $16,000 in 1863!), such that most of 1864 and the start of 1865 were mostly idle, according to Abbe in Austin and the Reese River Mining District, 1985. The Civil War also had its pull.
This map was drawn as the district started to come back to life after the Civil War. The Oregon Mill was built in ept. 1863, one of the first handfull of mills built between August and September. In MArch, 1864, and one of the most successful of the first mining companies. That company built a roasting furnace as part of the Mill complex, shown by the multiple buildings on this map.
