21 pages. "United Reese River Silver Mining Company, Situated in Austin, Lander County, Nevada. Report by B. Silliman, M.A., M.D., of Yale College. San Francisco, Cal, December, 1864." This is an early Nevada mining report by one of the most prominent mining geologists in the country, Benjamin Silliman. Though printed in 1865, Silliman's wrote his report in 1864, just after Nevada got statehood and in the beginning years of Austin's rich mining history. Begins with a general geographical and geological overview of Austin, distinguishing its veins and ore from those in places like Virginia City: "In the Austin District it requires a sharp eye to detect in the soil the small fragments of vein stuff, "float," which have guided the explorers to the discovery of some of the richest veins." He then describes in detail each type of ore. The United Reese River Silver Mining Co. is composed of 30 mines (listed on pg. 9-10). Silliman reports detailed findings from the Diana, Whitlatch Union, Gov'r Seymour, North Star, and Black Lode. He predicts that of the 5,000 feet representing the company's property, that 2,000 feet can be made "productive or dividend paying" within a year with the right capital investments. Silliman's report ends on pg. 18. What follows next are assay results from 28 claims completed by Gideon E. Moore. Last comes a list of the company officers. Overall, this is a detailed window into the geological make-up of Austin's mines from a trusted authority. Printed by Wm. C. Bryant & Co., New York. "Printed for Private Distribution."
