Excellent letter and cover from JF Slater, Sacramento, Oct. 29, 1865 to JC Meussdorfer in San Francisco. Letter reports sales information, but also notes that "business very quiet it is so all over town..." And the postscript specifically mentions the Steamer Yosemite disaster. Slater says: "Last night had to set up as Nurse with the sufferers by the Yosemite...Its awful too[sic.] look at these poor unfortunate people scalded." The steamer Yosemite was a 248 ft. sidewheel steamer. On Oct. 12th, 1865 (two weeks before our letter), the boilers exploded as the steamer was pulling away from the docks at Rio Vista, killing 45 passengers and crew members and injuring many more. Burn victims being the "scalded" Slater was helping treat. Meussdorfer was a well-known hat manufacturer in San Francisco.
