This is a manuscript document signed by H.F. Leggett, 38th Infantry A.A.Q.M. It is a voucher for work done by a carpenter. 8.5 x 7.75" Given the date (Sept. 3rd, 1868), Leggett was likely an African American soldier, as the fort was being managed at that point by the 125th U.S. Colored Infantry. Ft. McRae was a U.S. Army fort first established by California Volunteers during the U.S. Civil War in 1863 near Elephant Butte, Sierra County, New Mexico. Named Fort McRae after Captain Alexander McRae, 3rd U.S. Cavalry, who was killed in the Battle of Valverde on Feb 21, 1862. During the Civil War, the post protected settlers and travelers from the Apache along the Jornada del Muerto (journey of the dead) road from Dona Ana. At the end of the Civil War, it was still garrisoned by the 1st California Volunteer Infantry. That continued until August 1866 when they were replaced by Companies C and K of the 125th U.S. Colored Infantry (Buffalo Soldiers) under the command of Captain E. P. Horne. Abandoned in 1876.
