Exceptionally rare original source material (used by Couch & Carpenter, 1943) for Comstock ore production the year of the Big Bonanza discovery. Abstract of Statement from the Quarterly Assessment of the Proceeds of the Mines of Storey County for the Quarter ending Sept. 20th, 1873. Lists 13 active mines including Belcher, Crown Point, Chollar Potosi, Empire, Gould & Curry, Hale & Norcross, Sierra Nevada, and more. Includes three tailings operations: Parke & Bowie, CC Stevenson, and the Union Mill & Mining Co. (which was controlled by the Bank of California and William Sharon). Lists Number of tons extracted, value per ton, taxes levied, etc. Signed by county auditor Charles Rawson. For this year, the largest producers are the Belcher at 34,000 tons and Crown Point at 30,000 tons, related to the 1870 Crown Point-Belcher bonanza discovery. Interestingly, the Con. Virginia and California, the site of the March 1873 Big Bonanza discovery, are NOT listed on this form (or in Couch & Carpenter, 1943). This form was issued 6 months after the discovery. Were Mackay and Fair withholding production info about that discovery in an attempt to manipulate stocks? 17 x 22" Folds, some separation.
