Letters Patent from the State of California, March 25th, 1875, for Reuben Baker for 280 acres of School Lands in Monterey County. Signed by California Governor Romualdo Pacheco, as well as Secretary of State Drury Melone. 16 x 21" Folds, some toning and soiling. Pacheco (1831-1899) served as California's 12th Governor from February to December 1875, replacing Newton Booth who had been elected to the US Senate. In addition to being California's only Hispanic governor, Pacheco also served as lieutenant governor, in the California State Senate, US Minister to Central America, and three terms in the US House of Representatives. During the Civil War, he was appointed Brigadier General by Governor Stanford and commanded the First Brigade of the California Native Cavalry.
