Obverse: Bust left, ANDRES BELLO / 1780 1865. Reverse: Sunrise over the Andes, CONSTANCIA EN EL TRABAJO / CHILE / 1877 (Perseverance in Work). Silver, 50mm, Unc, uneven spotted toning. Andres Bello received Chilean nationality in 1832 was elected senator for the city of Santiago between 1837 and 1864. He authored the Civil Code of Chile between 1840 and 1855, considered one of the most original works of American law. He became the first rector of the new University of Chile in 1842. While living in Chile, he published his major works on grammar and law and received important awards, including that of an honorary member of the Royal Spanish Academy in 1851. He is considered by many to be the best Chilean poetry of the nineteenth century.
