Famous Bonanza mine on the Comstock Lode. This report describes a fire on the 1600 foot level and the complicated process used to put it out! 21 pp. Softcover, stapled binding. Report from W.H. Patton, superintendent. Printed by E.B. Dean & Co., S.F. The recounting of the fire begins on pg. 13. The fire broke out in December on the 1600 foot level from the timbers of the old California stopes. No doubt a cause was smoldering timbers from an 1881 fire! Patton describes how they contained it with timber and cement, but the real trick was putting it out for good. He decided to inject the tunnels with carbonic acid gas, a method that had proved successful in coal mine fires. To generate the gas, he built a coal furnace on the Ophir incline station. and began injecting gas in April at the rate of 40,000 cubic feet per day. He waited until the first of July to enter and see if it had worked. He found only blackened timbers. They could now work without "the constant danger of being driven out by a lurking enemy..."Also describes work from the 1200 down to the 1950 ft. levels.
