Iconic view appropriately titled "The Wonder of the Age" (Kilburn #8480) showing a close-up of the Ferris Wheel at the Chicago World's Fair. You can see multiple trolley-sized cars holding guests. Scuffs on border. Medium contrast. The Ferris Wheel was a new invention showcased at the fair, meant to equal the awe and excitement caused by the Eiffel Tower's unveiling at the 1889 World's Fair. The Ferris Wheel was designed by George Washington Gale Ferris Jr. The wheel rotated on a 71-ton, 45.5-foot axle. There were 36 cars, each fitted with 40 revolving chairs and able to accommodate up to 60 people, giving a total capacity of 2,160. The wheel carried some 38,000 passengers daily and took 20 minutes to complete two revolutions for which the ticket holder paid 50 cents.
