B.W. Kilburn stereoview #8628, The Glass Dress, World's Columbian Exposition. View shows woman posing in white dress made of glass. Medium contrast. This was one of the most popular exhibits at the fair, located in Edward Drummond Libbey's Glass Pavilion. Libbey was the only American glass firm represented. His pavilion even featured live glass making, in addition to a room where everything was made out of glass. A well known actress of the time asked Libbey to make her a glass dress. It was so popular that journalists thought it would become a new fashion trend. It even attracted the attention of visiting Spanish Princess Eulalia who, after seeing this dress, commissioned Libbey to make her one of her own, which he did. The fair was a huge success for Libbey, making his name synonymous with fine glassware.
