Fascinating letter dateline Mono Lake, Cal, August 31st, 1896. Message to the Bullion & Exchange Bank in Carson. Mentions that a note has gone unpaid because the Mono Lake Hydraulic Company failed to pay for the month of June & July. Signed W.P. Nay. 8 x 5" Winslow P. Nay came to Mono Lake in 1888 and owned the Nay Ranch at Mono Lake. He was a teamster who delivered wood to Bodie and also owned a gasoline launch to take people out on Mono Lake. In May 1898, Nay and five others drowned in Mono Lake when strong wind capsized their boat, the Comet. The Mono Lake Hydraulic Company had 4,000 acres of land above the lake as well as the title to Lundy Lake. Their plan was to hydraulic mine and then dump the tailings into Mono Lake!
