This group of covers dates from 1928-1942, most are 1935-36. Many have pictorials or text on the front. The Hawaiian island of Oahu held a position of the first importance in the military structure of the United States before and during World War II. What gave Oahu its military importance was the great naval base of Pearl Harbor. The Army had primary responsibility for protecting Pearl Harbor and, to fulfill this responsibility, before the war it maintained on Oahu its largest and, in many respects, its best equipped overseas garrison. The Army's objective was to make Oahu impregnable, and in April 1941 the War Department confidently described the island as the strongest fortress in the world.
