Obverse: Three-quarter bust of GEORGE STEPHENSON, in wreath dated 1825. Outer in902172tion: PRESENTED BY L. ROPNER . MAYOR OF STOCKTON-ON-TEES . 1925. Reverse: Early steam engine / 1825 1925 / modern steam engine. Above: RAILWAY CENTENARY. White Metal, 39mm, Unc, holed as made. Stephenson was a pioneer in developing the railway industry in England. The reverse depicts images of Locomotion No. 1 and a 1925 Pacific class locomotive. Ropner became the Mayor of Stockton-on-Tees in 1925 and began working with the Royal Mint and other medal manufacturers to create a Railway Centenary medal. In May 1925 the contract was awarded to W.J. Dingley one of the private Birmingham manufacturers. Approximately 8,000 of the base metal Medals were minted and presented to the children of Stockton on Tees in 1925 as part of the general celebrations.
