Ingalls was the controversial sheriff of Esmeralda County. He was on the original board of the Goldfield Athletic Club that raised the money for and organized the Gans-Nelson fight. He was also on the board of the First National Bank of Goldfield. He was sheriff during the Goldfield mining strike. He was suspected of many suspect activities.
