This group of letters (all transcribed) is from John Alexander Forbes who left his home in Nova Scotia and headed west to make his fortune. They give a glimpse into the life of an itinerant miner and the camps he lived in along the way. Letters are from Sacramento, Jamestown, Chloride City, many form Pioche in the 1870's, Virginia City, Turkey Creek, Tombstone, Logan City, Quigotoa, and Prescott. "...there has been a great many white men killed here by indians...about 500 white men in the district [Chloride City]..." ",,,Chinese take the girls place on this coast...they are everywhere. [Pioche]" "...have traveled over twelve hundred miles alone with my horse and buggy and am now in a new country called Arizona Territory. [Turkey Creek]" "I am in a new mining town by the name of Tombstone a singular name for a mining town...the indians two years ago were very bad...there are a great many Mexicans here...you could hardly tell them from the indians..." The blue photographs are not identified but came from the same correspondence. City: State: United States Date: 1870-1919 ID# 37523
