Very rare, early California bond from the county of Lake, in northern California. Ten year bond was to mature on Jan. 1, 1881. Allegorical female, draped in U.S. flag at the left and a male flagholder, cornucopia and masts of a tall ship at top right. Green underprint of possibly the state capital building or county seat. 25 cent Internal Revenue stamp with Geo. Washington at bottom left. Signed by the county treasurer, Wm. S. Cook and county auditor, Sarshel Bynum. F.H. has only seen one other example of this piece through the decades. Low bond #20. Red pen cancelled, and all coupons clipped.
