Stewart at one time operated drug stores in Silver City, Nevada; Gold Hill, Nevada; Virginia City, Nevada; Bodie, California; Seattle, Washington; Tacoma, Washington; and Walla Walla, Washington. In Volume Two of the Nevada Bottle Book, Holabird describes Stewart's difficult early life in Canada before reaching Nevada in 1871. In Silver City, Stewart worked with Charles Boisot. In 1877, Stewart become sole owner and also opened stores in Gold Hill and Virginia City. "With three drug stores open simultaneously, Stewart was the second franchised drug store in the west." Unfortunately, the Virginia City store closed within a year due to a Comstock downturn. He sold his Gold Hill store in 1880 and closed his Silver City at about the same time. In 1877, Boisot left Silver City for Bodie and Stewart joined him in business there. By 1880, Stewart was operating alone in Bodie. In 1882, he went to Washington and began his businesses there (Seattle, Tacoma, Walla Walla). For more info, please see Volume Two of the Nevada Bottle Book.
