Rare Gold Rush era volume on a "journey across the Plains" by Chandless, published by Smith, Elder & Co., London. 346pp and 16pp of ads. Set to Print in April, 1857. Map opposite title page, 8 x 14", showing St Joe Missouri to the California coast. Shows the route through Independence Rock, Ft Laramie, etc. Shows no California gold camps. Thought to be the first book about Mormons published by non-Americans. Chandless was a paid teamster. Upon arrival in Salt Lake, "I was an object of suspicion to none; ... none took me for a spy, nor was I one." "No English traveler, so far as I am aware, has written about Salt Lake," though many American writers had. Of interest: "I may remark that the $50 California pieces, now almost in disuse, were called "dobies" because octagonal- a very foolish shape." ...
