ALS (Autographed Letter Signed) by General George Marshall, Army Chief of Staff at the time, May 13, 1941. Typewritten letter to Barnet Nover of the Washington Post declining an invitation to speak at the Overseas Writers Club. Also, ALS signed "Jim" by James Forrestal/Secretary of Defense, March 11, 1949, to Barnet "Barney" Nover, Denver Post Washington Bureau, thanking him for recent courtesies. Note: Forrestal was the first US Secretary of Defense, appointed to the newly created position by President Truman in 1947. After frequent clashes, Truman forced Forrestal's resignation in 1949 by which time Forrestal suffered from depression and was subsequently admitted to Bethesda Naval Hospital; Forrestal committed suicide by jumping out of a 16th story hospital room window in May 1949.
