This acrylic diamond contains a presumably silver coin commemorating 75 years of Progress in Metals, and bears an image of a stack of cubes with the scientific symbols of the many metals produced by ASARCO Incorporated. This stack of cubes is a representation of the entrance sign at the Asarco Refinery in Amarillo, Texas. The 8-5/8 x 2-1/4 x 1-1/8-inch, gold-colored bar is a 3.6 pound ingot of Asarco Thermodyne Babbitt metal, an alloy of lead and tin once used extensively in the manufacture of babbitt bearings. The American Smelting & Refining Company was founded in 1899, then acquired by Meyer Guggenheim and his sons in 1901. Familiar to many for decades as A.S.& R.Co, the company officially changed its name to ASARCO Incorporated in 1975. The company is a fully integrated copper producer, from mining to refining to manufacturing of copper and other metal products. It was acquired by Grupo Mexico in 1999.
