Aaron White was a Connecticut lawyer who held that financing the War of the Rebellion with paper currency (that became known as "green backs") would bankrupt the United States, and eventually that all paper money would become worthless. He had minted some whimsical coins of his own design to illustrate his position. The obverse of this piece shows a sow hanging from hook with "SUS" to the left and "PENDENS: to the right, alluding to the suspension of specie payments by United States banks and the hard financial times that resulted in 1837 and 1857. The complete motto, from both obverse and reverse, reads "Never Keep a Paper Dollar in Your Pocket Till Tomorrow."
