This is the accounting ledger of Theodore Anderson of Philipsburg, Montana, with dates of entries from 1894 to 1903. Theodore took over operations of the Anderson Lumber Company when his brother Charles passed away in 1893. Charles had emigrated to the United States from Norway in 1875 and established a lumber and coal business in Philipsburg three years later. This ledger is in very good condition with intact spine and all 292 numbered pages in four sections. There is an alphabetic index of accounts at the front followed by 148 full-page ledgers, 72 half-page (two divided sections per page) ledgers, and 72 third-page ledgers. Most entries are in ink with some penciled in, and the handwriting is beautiful. The town of Philipsburg was named for Philip Deideshieimer, the inventor of the square set timbering system in 1860 that made possible the underground mining in the Comstock gold and silver mines of Virginia City, Nevada. A few years later, Deidesheimer designed and oversaw the construction of the Hope Mill and ore smelter for the St. Louis and Montana Mining Company in 1866. He subsequently platted the town that grew up around those operations in 1867, and the town was named Philipsburg in his honor (which was probably easier to spell and pronounce than Deidesheimersburg).
