Across the Continent, Lithograph, Frances F. Palmer, 1869. "Westward the Course of Empire Takes its way. Print is 9.5" x 12" , matted and framed, 19.5" x 23.5". In the Currier and Ives lithograph Across the Continent we see the whole story of frontier development laid out in one scene. Elements of development that happened in chronological succession are presented together, collapsing space and time into a single message of inevitable development. A railroad stretches diagonally across an open plain toward a distant mountain range. It is paralleled by a wagon trail, its chronological forerunner. In the lower left corner we see a rough frontier village with log cabins, a school, and a church. On the lower right, an Indian on horseback is partially obscured by the smoke from a locomotive.
