Adams & Co. Express Office San Francisco exchange note, #2835, second of exchange, order of Reuben Johnson for $126.50 on Mar 31, 1853, signed by Adams & Co. as agent. 3 very fine vignettes, center top depicts miners working the sluice box and others gathering around, watching, the background shows a mining camp, houses and a horse cart driving towards the settlement. The second vignette on the left shows 3 women in various poses looking off to the right, one touching a anchor, another having a bundle of wheat in her hand. A small, third one on the bottom, center titled Eureka showing a helmed Greek goddess sitting, leaning on a American shield. Black print on blue paper in New York. Some damage and staining on paper.
Despite the Gold rush in Northern California at the time, Adams & Company didn't last longer than 2 years due to outsourced, poor management. In 1854, Adams &Co. and 8 other express companies formed Adams Express, which was valued at $1 million. "During the Civil War, they
delivered the messages, documents and securities that underpinned economic and social movements of the 19th century, including the westward migration, the California Gold Rush and the Civil War.[...] Even up to today, it is one of the nation’s oldest and most respected closed-end funds."[Ref:adamfunds.com].
