38 long/short caliber Colt black powder revolver. 3 1/2" barrel ejectorless "Sheriff's Model." Since they were Colt's first medium frame double action revolver, they were known then as a "Self Cocker" revolver. Adams Express was formally started in 1854, but had its roots back to the 1830's. It is believed that Mr. Wells and Mr. Fargo got their start here. They expanded operations to the California gold fields and San Francisco. Due to robberies in California, they began issuing firearms to guards. The 1877 Colt double action revolvers were ordered from Colt and engraved with "ADAMS EX CO." This one is further engraved "NO. 7" in block letters on the backstrap. The number "7" is the guard check out number. A Historical letter from Colt is recommended. Note: Black Powder Antique.
