From 1916 when Prohibition started in Colorado Adolph Coors and his son diversified the Coors product line with near beer (fermented like regular beer but the alcohol was condensed out) and malted milk, made the same way as malted barley for beer. The company changed it's name to Adolph Coors Company in 1920 to better fit with it's more general product line, which included cement, scientific and chemical products made from porcelain and ceramics, using the clay found behind the factory in Golden.
Coors eventually became the leading producer of malted milk, only closing that division when prohibition ended and the company's resources were need to resume brewing one of the most popular beers in the world. To do this, the company acquired everything needed to brew Coors beer, including the oil wells that produced the energy to run the brewery, the farms that grew the ingredients, the beer bottling plant and the distribution trucks. This expansion was financed with profits the Coors family made during the prohibition years, much of which came from the Malted Milk Division. The Coors Porcelain Company remained in business, however, and grew into one of the world's leading ceramic manufacturers, which is now Coorstek and, according to Forbes, makes more money today for the Coors family than its beer.
