Lot of 21 pieces. An important discovery, this group of material came for a long-time collection in Dayton. It highlights Sutro's mining and political life. 1) 1874 letter from Lazard Freres, important banker in Paris, to Adolph Sutro in London. Sutro travelled abroad to gain support and funding for the Sutro Tunnel. "You have means sufficient to work ahead without interruption for thirty months." "We are at your disposal to telegraph whatever you think proper..." Also mentions elections for board members. 2) Letter datelined Virginia (City), July 19th, 1874 from John Nugent. Addressed to Sutro, it discusses the senate election where William Sharon and Sutro were competing to fill the seat of retiring William Stewart. "Last night the Republican County Committee met and...overwhelming majority for Sharon." Sharon went on to win this election. 3) 1862 handwritten promissory note datelined San Francisco where Sutro is borrowing $654 from David Ubiger. Signed by Sutro. 4 x 7.75" 4) 1878 letter on United States Land Office letterhead to Sutro, 3pp. Letter discusses mining claims west of Mt. Davidson. "In my mind I am quite undetermined as to the real value of the locality....further than a strong belief that upon the sinking of a deep shaft and judicious explorations therefrom bonanzas are to be found." "We are willing to give you a controlling interest in the whole matter." 5) 1878 letter from San Mateo to Sutro regarding Sutro's son Edgar. "Edgar's slowness...gives us dissatisfaction also." "The animal predominates--heedlissness is the rule." Also mentions spelling and dance lessons, so this is likely his son's teacher. Discusses that a hall has been set aside for Sutro to talk, and a popular assemblyman will be there with him. From Sutro's failed senate run against Sharon. 8) 1878 letter on letterhead from Minnequa Springs to Sutro. Sutro's brother and family are at the health resort and have informed letter writer that Sutro is heading back to Nevada. Signature illegible. 9) 1878 letter from James Delavan of Virginia City to Sutro. Mentions the Mr. Thompson has a pump coming from Scotland via. Cape Horn to San Francisco. "With it he could handle all the water in the mines of the Comstock...that the Sutro Tunnel would not be needed for drainage."
