Lot of 6 items that lead us to a mystery worth research. 1-2) Two telegraphs from the Untied State Pacific Telegraph Company. One from R. H. Stretch and one from his brother James. (Stretch was the Nevada state mineralogist in 1866. He must have also been working for Sutro.) They are addressed to Sutro. They both sound urgent. The first asks Mr. Sutro to "Send railroad map tomorrow without fail in tin case." What railroad? He is a mineralogist, not an engineer. The Central Pacific was still stuck in the Sierra's. The V&T? Not until 1869. Perhaps it was referring to the San Francisco and Washoe Railroad. It was an effort to compete with the Central Pacific and would go from Placerville to Virginia City and on to Austin. I am sure that Sutro would be very interested in this railroad as it would go right by the front of his tunnel. 3) The cardboard covered "Sutro Tunnel" book. A classic in near perfect condition. There are small reddish stains, which I believe was from the printing process. 4-5) Two iconic Sutro tunnel post cards. 6) A letter from the Sutro Library in 1963 about their sale of duplicate Sutro materials. These items came from that sale.
