Large Man in the Maze by Susie Miles--14" diam x 4.5" high. Basket is in excellent condition. The Akimel O’odham women made wonderful baskets up until around the 1920s after which they slowly quite making them as commercial utilitarian vessels became available and after finding that tourists were willing only to pay one or two dollars for a basket that might have taken weeks to make. One of the favorite designs of the Pima was that of the Man in the Maze. According to pima history, the Man in the Maze, a reference to a design appearing on native basketry and petroglyphs which positions him at the entry to a labyrinth. This labyrinth is believed by the Pima to be a floorplan of his house In the middle of the "maze," a person finds their dreams and goals. City: State: Arizona Date: c. 1900's HWAC# 32007
