Alabama # 2 located on the Alabama Lode, Alpine District, Amador County. One foot to the share. # 68 for 20 shares to Joseph W Vernon. Signed by D Davidson and president R Thompson. Datelined San Francisco 1864. Incorporated Aug. 21, 1863. 25c Power of Att'y Revenue Stamp. Allegorical woman holding the American flag. WB Cooke & Co. printer. Not cancelled. No discoloration, edge, corner or pinhole issues. Mentioned by Addison Curtiss in May, 1864 (see Addison Curtiss Diaries, May 3, 1864). Donald Davidson was a San Franciscan financier. Chalmers called him a mine speculator. He went on to say he is a swindler and the biggest liar out there. Most likely our secretary. However, there is also a Daniel Davidson who ran a meat market in 1870 and donated the lot for the jail. With Silver Mountain City on the downswing and Monitor on the upswing, he bought 50 head of sheep and opened a meat market in the promising new town. He ran the Davidson Mill at Silver Creek near his house. Both would later be owned by Chalmers! The mill would be renamed the Exchequer. [Thank you to Karen Dustman, local historian and author of the book "Silver Mountain City" (Clairitage Press) for background information on the mine and signatures.] Prag Collection
