"Eskimo woman from Cape Prince of Wales." No. 5551. Copyright by FH Nowell, Nome, 1907. 7 x 9" View of Native woman with an asleep child strapped to her back. Nowell joined his father in Alaska in the late 1880s, first attempting mining ventures on Douglas Island and the Silver Bow Basin. He left Alaska for California in the 1890s, returning in 1900. He established a studio at Nome between the Golden Gate Hotel and the Post Office. He was later appointed official photographer for the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition in 1909.
