Early flushing toilet company, The Alexander Manufacturing Company, unissued stock certificate which features a vignette of a toilet showing inner works. The company, which was incorporated in Michigan with operations in Detroit, made porcelain toilet bowls and wooden closet tanks. In 1869, David Buick (a Detroit-based inventor, best known for founding the Buick Motor Company) started working at The Alexander Manufacturing Co. at age 15 and rose to be a foreman. The company folded in 1882. William Sherwood and Buick acquired The Alexander Manufacturing Company in 1882 and renamed it the Buick and Sherwood Company, with Buick as president.

Certificate has ornate border and coupon. Printed by The Calvert Lith. Co. Detroit. Very fine condition, no folds or tears, one small pin hole at top center.
