Allen and Wheelock 32 rim fire caliber black powder single shot boot pistol. Cartridge guns were just hitting the market at the beginning of the Civil War with the invention of the Smith and Wesson “Rollin White patent” The Henry Cartridge Rifle and the Spencer Cartridge Rifle were beginning use in the North as were small(22 caliber -41 caliber) rim fire ,pin fire and teete fire pistols among other. These small belt and boot guns acted as backup to the Bowie knife and main battle rifle of the soldiers. These Allen and Wheelock pistols came with both round and octagon barrels, this is an octagon, 5 inch barrel. It is a swing out and load with an automatic extractor.
